SINT MAARTEEN : HEALTH

Traveling to Saint Martin

No vaccinations are mandatory to travel to Sint Maarten. The island has medical centers in the Dutch part; however, if you are French or European, we advise you to go to the French side to benefit from our healthcare systems: the Louis Constant Fleming Hospital in Marigot. Saint Martin is an overseas collectivity, so the French social security system is in operation. You can therefore bring your French social security card to cover your medical expenses. For Europeans, don't hesitate to travel with your European Health Insurance Card.

Sint Maarten is a tropical destination in the Caribbean. Therefore, the island has already faced epidemics of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue or chikungunya. These diseases can cause joint pain or fever. It is also possible that you may be asymptomatic.

To limit mosquito bites, don't hesitate to bring mosquito repellent sprays with you (as well as soothing lotion in case of bites). Insect repellent bombs are sold in stores. Most accommodations are equipped with air conditioning in the rooms and sometimes in addition to mosquito nets.

Sint Maarten is an island in the Caribbean, so the sun is very strong. Also, don't forget to pack items to protect yourself from the sun's rays: caps, hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, etc. For your comfort, know that on most beaches in Sint Maarten and Saint Martin, it is possible to rent sun loungers and umbrellas.

Like in Martinique or Guadeloupe, beware of this tree in Saint Martin: the mancenillier. It is a tree that often grows on the beach. Spontaneously in case of rain, one might want to take refuge under it. Don't do it! This tree produces a sap that causes severe burns. You can identify this tree because its fruits resemble apples. Moreover, it is often marked with a red cross on the trunk. If you are snorkeling, be vigilant for sea urchins and lionfish whose dorsal spine is venomous.
